Georgia’s Always On My Mind

I’m quite a fan of word games, be they non sequitur or garden path sentences or paraprosdokian.

My favourite though is the contradiction. If you were to pick up your Dictionary of Quotations and ignore the 35% that is Woody Allen and instead concentrate on the 45% that is Oscar Wilde, you will notice that the vast majority of his output, or at least that which is suitable for compressing into a memorable quotation fits into that designation.

You know, this kind of thing:

An excellent man: he has no enemies, and none of his friends like him.

Or maybe this one:

I can resist everything except temptation.

And so on.

Aside from that, it is quite common to name your bank with such a contradiction. I don’t know of a band called Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo but there is one called the Tall Dwarfs.

Or Fatboy Slim.

Or my personal favourite, though slightly more obscure, the Pine Valley Cosmonauts. (the title of this post is a clue)
